What is Voice over IP?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is used to deliver voice communication over an IP data network, either on the Internet or your own internal network. To do so it converts the analog voice signals into digital data packets that can be transmitted through IP networks. This way VoIP supports the real-time, two-way transmission of conversations.

Nowadays VoIP is available on most communication devices, such as: PCs, tablets, smartphones.

Benefits of using VoIP instead of PSTN:

  • VoIP handles media types other than voice e.g.: you can transfer images, video and text along with the voice.
  • VoIP is flexible with the network layout, because the underlying network does not need to be of a practicular layout or topology.
  • Because of the compression of data packets during transmission, more calls can be handled on one access line.
  • VoIP provides some extra features, such as: Caller ID, Contact List, Voicemail, Call Forwarding,... etc.
  • Depending on the VoIP provider you use, your calls may cost much less, or in case you are using Skype or other similar software your call can be cost free.

These are the advantages of using VoIP, so it's no wonder more and more businesses are adopting it to their Phone Systems to exploit it's benefits. A great example is the OZEKI Phone System which is a VoIP based PBX system.
